Hardware Best Practices- General Care
Hardware Care Overview:
We ask that staff at our resort partners please treat all flaik hardware as they would treat their own personal handheld electronics. Please be cautious to not throw, drop, or otherwise mistreat our equipment. This includes both the flaik GPS tags as well as flaik owned scanning devices. Below are some simple guidelines to follow to keep all flaik hardware equipment in good working order and prolong the lifespan of the devices.
Cold/Wet Weather Care:
We recommend using the provided scanner cases, especially on really cold or wet days at the resort. A handwarmer can be placed in the back of the TC7x cases (up against the battery), to slow battery drain in really cold temperatures.
On exceptionally cold days, wait as long as possible before staging electronics outside, as extreme cold can cause electronics to perform sluggishly. We also recommend in between scan flows when scanners are not in use, place them in a jacket pocket or similar instead of out in the elements on a table or a snowbank. This will allow the scanners to stay warm through the scan process and minimize battery drain and loss of functionality due to cold. Once Scanners are no longer needed outside after morning processes, move them inside.
Do not allow flaik Hardware to sit in pooled water for prolonged periods of time. Remove excess water/snow from Tags and Scanners prior to placing them on their charging Docks. Water and electricity do not mix well. Drying the devices off before placing them on charge will help minimize oxidation/mineralization formation on electrical contacts, which may lead to charge issues.
Labeling flaik Hardware:
If it's necessary to place any sort of label on any hardware component, ensure that you ONLY use painters tape, low adhesive masking tape (some masking tape can be pretty gunky), or laminated labels. Additionally, it is fine to use a semi-permanent marker, like a sharpie, as this can be removed easily with rubbing alcohol and Cotton Balls. It is preferred that labelling is avoided whenever possible.
*Please DO NOT utilize any of the following to label our hardware components:
Scotch Tape(Once cold, gets brittle and flakes off; difficult to remove)
Duct Tape (Leaves nasty residue on hardware; time-consuming to remove)
Paper Labels (Once wet, becomes a nightmare to clean off the paper and adhesive residue)
General Stickers (Time-consuming to remove; if large, cost of time to clean will be passed on to resort abuser)
Vinyl/Electrical Tape (Once cold, gets brittle and flakes off; difficult to remove)
BIST (Built In Self Test) Error Tags:
If you notice any tags continually failing BIST (built-in self-test) while on or off the dock, the first step is to reset them to see if that solves the error. You can reset these Tags as you encounter them. However, If the BIST does not clear after a reset, power the device down and remove it from the functional fleet, and set it aside for flaik staff to assess at a later date.
