GPS Tag Testing

If your resort is interested in utilizing GPS tags, the best practice is to test a small batch of tags out to ensure solid cellular connection at the specific location in which they will be utilized as well as test out integrating them into the order of operations on scanners and Class Management.

Upon request, flaik can provide a small batch of test tags, charge capacity, and guidance on best practices.

Receiving the Tags-

Upon receipt of the test tags, they will need to be powered on. Utilize the power cord to plug the tag dock (power tray) into a wall outlet (the power port is on the back of the dock). Place all tags in the dock, and allow them to fully power on. Reference this chart and ensured they are fully charged prior to testing. Once all tags are green, they are ready to go out for testing.

Field Testing-

There are two methods for setting up a field test.

One, you can manually create a test class in Class Management and add specific tag ID's to the test instructor/guest(s) within the class. This method does not require you to set up any test scanning modes and is the simplest way to get the tags out on the mountain quickly for a test drive.

Two, you can set up a test scanning mode that utilizes the GPS tag action types and then scan a test class into Class Management utilizing the scanning mode you've set up. This method takes a bit more time but will offer perspective on what utilizing tags looks like with the scanning of classes.

Basic instructions for each option are below.

Setting Up Field Test - Manually Add to Class Management

  1. Navigate to Class Management and manually "Create New Class"

  2. Add a test instructor (whoever is taking a tag out for testing) and test guests as necessary (if you want to take multiple tags out at a time). If adding test guests to the system and would like to view the Relive Your Lesson email for these guests, we recommend putting in your email address for them.

  3. Manually fill in the tag ID's for the instructor and guest(s) and save the class

Setting Up Field Test - Scanning in Via Tag Action Type

From Admin Settings:

  1. Navigate to Admin Settings-->Product Settings-->Scanning Modes

  2. Create a new scanning mode and clearly name it appropriately (ex. "Tag Testing Mode")

  3. Within this scanning mode, select "Teaching with tags" as the Scanning Type and "Add Class (Tag and Pass)" as the Action Type:

  4. Select a task and then save the scanning mode.

If you want to keep things really clean, you can opt to create a test task as well that you can link to the test scanning mode. However, if you utilize one of your other tasks, the scanning mode and class created with it can always be deleted after the test so that it does not mess up your daily data.

From the Scanner In-Hand:

  1. Scan a test class into Class Management utilizing the test scanning mode

When scanning with this scanning mode, you'll be prompted to scan the pass media and tag barcode for each member of the class prior to hitting "submit."

Initiating Field Test-

Once the class is in Class Management, take the test tags and place them around the ankle of the participants (directly above the boot). Please note that tags need to be worn on the outside of clothing in order to allow for optimal connectivity.

Tags can then be taken out on the mountain for testing. We recommend taking them for a ski/snowboard around the mountain where they will be used most frequently.

Have someone monitor Mountain View (under the Class Management tab) while the tags are out on the mountain, keeping eye on the GPS and comms ages on each tag as they travel around the mountain. If the tags are inside a building, the GPS age will increase, as there is little to no ability to keep a GPS fix when inside. If the tags travel through a poor service area, the comms age may age up until the tags are able to gain a strong connection again.

The tags store GPS data so even if the comms age has increased, the historical data should remain quite accurate.

Explore Mountain View throughout the field test process to review all capabilities.

Relive Your Lesson (RYL)

Instructor tags will not send out a link to RYL, however, any guests within the field test class with emails on file will receive the RYL link. Again, when setting up the class initially, it's a good idea to put your own email in for any test guests created so that you can review the RYL experience.

If you need to resend a guest's RYL link, Instructions Here.
